Year One Final Competition Results

The EcoCAR 2 awards ceremony, after a reception and dinner, took place late yesterday evening. The EcoCAR Buckeyes were, again, recipients of many awards and accolades. The final standings are as follows.

6 University of Tennessee, Knoxville – 765 points out of 1000

5 University of Washington – 816

4 Virginia Tech – 855

3 Waterloo – 859

2 Ohio State – 919

1 Mississippi State – 952

This was the highest score ever recorded by an OSU team in DOE AVTC competitions since 1996. The Buckeyes were extremely successful in receiving recognition for their outstanding work in all of the key areas of modeling, simulation and control in which OSU is recognized as a leader, both in education and research. The OSU team received:

  • The Mathworks Modeling Award, for their superior and innovative approach to model based design and control.
  • The dSpace Embedded Success Award, for their use of real-time control hardware and software.
  • 1st place in the Final Controller Hardware-In-the-Loop (HIL) evaluation.

(The judges commented after each of these awards that the OSU team has demonstrated methods that go beyond current industry state of the art) Additionally, the team took a number of other awards including:

  • 2nd place in the Project Initialization Approval event
  • 3rd place in the Controls Presentation
  • 3rd place in the Business Program
  • 2nd place in the Tradeshow Presentation
  • 3rd place overall Outreach Program
  • Best Creative Outreach Event for Evolution of Transportation
  • 1st place Skit Video!…the EcoCAR 2 organizers liked it so much that they showed it multiple times throughout competition!
  • and, finally, for the third year in a row the Outstanding Women in Engineering Award was given to an OSU team leader: Amanda Hyde, M.S. candidate in MAE.

Congrats to the OSU EcoCAR 2 team on a great Year One competition!! Year 2 of the competition will take place next summer at the GM Desert Proving Ground in Yuma, AZ. By then, teams will be able to demonstrate a fully functional plug-in hybrid powertrain under the most demanding conditions. The team is already at work, and we expect to receive a 2013 Chevrolet Malibu very soon. Stay tuned for next year!!

That’s a Year One Wrap!!! #EcoCAR2
